The honest answer on American Express in Ireland in 2026 — no Amex consumer card is open to Irish residents, why, and what Amex does still do here.

Short answer: you cannot apply for an American Express card as a resident of the Republic of Ireland in 2026. American Express does not issue consumer credit or charge cards here, and no Irish bank issues Amex-branded cards under licence.

That is not a temporary gap. Amex withdrew from consumer card issuing in Ireland many years ago and has not returned.

Why the International Currency Card does not help

The workaround most people find is the American Express International Currency Card — a euro, dollar or sterling charge card issued out of London by American Express Services Europe Limited, for people living in countries where Amex has no local issuer.

It does not apply here. American Express states that ICC cards are not offered to residents of the USA, Singapore, the European Union (UK exempt) and certain other excluded countries. Ireland is in the European Union, so Irish residents are outside the eligible group.

You will find older Amex application forms online that reference an “annual government stamp duty charge if you’re resident in the Republic of Ireland” of €30. That is a legacy line covering cardholders from an earlier period, not evidence that the product is open to Irish applicants now. Check the current eligibility page before you spend time on an application.

If you had been eligible, the ICC range would have been the Platinum Card, the American Express Gold Card, the American Express Card and the Basic Card, all charge cards with no preset spending limit and no interest provided you clear the balance in full each month.

What Amex actually does in Ireland

Merchant acceptance. Amex sells card acceptance to Irish businesses, routed through its partner Elavon rather than directly. If you run a shop or restaurant and want to take Amex, that is the route.

Travel. American Express Travel sells holidays, tours and hotel bookings covering Ireland, and Amex cardholders from other countries get benefits at Irish properties through Fine Hotels + Resorts.

Corporate and business travel. Amex operates corporate card and business travel programmes across Europe. Amex is explicit that not every corporate programme runs in every country, so an Irish-registered company needs to confirm availability with Amex directly rather than assuming.

Cards issued elsewhere. If you hold an Amex card issued in another country — most commonly the UK — it works in Ireland wherever Amex is accepted. Moving to Ireland does not automatically close it, but you should tell Amex your address has changed and check the terms, because eligibility is tied to residency.

Acceptance in Ireland

Amex is accepted in Ireland, but not as widely as Visa or Mastercard. Expect it to work in hotels, larger restaurants, airlines, department stores and international chains, and expect to be turned down in small independents, some petrol stations and some pubs.

The reason is cost. Amex charges merchants a higher fee than Visa or Mastercard, and Irish retailers with thin margins often decline it. If you are visiting Ireland with an Amex card, carry a Visa or Mastercard as a backup.

We have not been able to verify a current, retailer-by-retailer acceptance list for the Irish supermarket chains. Check at the till rather than relying on a list.

What to use instead in Ireland

If you want the things people usually want an Amex for:

  • Points on flights — the Bank of Ireland Aer Credit Card is the only Irish card earning Avios
  • Cashback — Avant Money Everyday+ pays 5% at selected grocery retailers for 12 months, and AIB Platinum pays 0.5% above €5,000 of annual spend
  • Charge card discipline, pay in full each month — no Irish issuer sells a true charge card. Any Irish credit card cleared in full monthly does the same job
  • No foreign transaction fee — Revolut, N26 and bunq beat every Irish bank card on currency
