AIB credit cards and debit cards 2026 | Rates and fees

AIB's credit cards in 2026 — Click, be, Platinum, Student and Brown Thomas — with APRs, fees, salary rules and what changed on current account charges.

Bank cardsUpdated

AIB is the largest credit card issuer in Ireland by product range. It runs five cards on Visa, none of which charge an annual bank fee except one, and it splits them by salary rather than by reward type.

All figures below are AIB’s own published rates, checked on 1 August 2026. Rates are variable and AIB changes them without much notice, so check the rate page before you apply.

AIB credit cards in 2026

Card Purchase rate Representative APR Minimum salary Annual bank fee
CLICK Visa 9.11% variable 13.8% variable €16,000 None
Platinum Visa 11.84% variable 17.0% variable €40,000 None
Brown Thomas Visa Not published separately 20.5% variable €16,000 None
Student Visa 14.85% variable 20.5% variable Student account required None
‘be’ Visa 16.79% variable, or 14.16% if you spend €5,000+ 22.9% variable €16,000 None
Ascent Visa 9.48% variable 34.7% variable Not published €120 (€80 per additional user)

Everyone pays €30 government stamp duty per account per year on top of these. All the cards give you up to 56 days interest-free on purchases if you clear the statement in full and on time.

CLICK Visa

The lowest advertised rate AIB has. At 9.11% on purchases it is one of the cheapest credit cards in the country for carrying a balance, and the entry salary is only €16,000. There is no rewards programme and no introductory 0% period — it is a plain low-rate card.

Platinum Visa

Needs €40,000 salary. You get 0.5% cashback once you spend over €5,000 in a year, capped at €225 per 12-month period, plus a 3.83% introductory rate on purchases and balance transfers for the first 12 months. It also carries Visa Luxury Hotel Collection benefits.

The cashback only starts once you cross €5,000 of annual spend, so a light spender gets nothing from it.

‘be’ Visa

Aimed at people who want the intro rate: 3.83% variable on purchases and balance transfers for 12 months, with balance transfers capped at €5,000 in total. After that you sit on 16.79%, dropping to 14.16% if you spend €5,000 or more in a 12-month period.

The headline 22.9% representative APR is the highest of AIB’s mainstream cards, so this only makes sense if you actually use the intro period.

Brown Thomas Visa

A co-brand card paying 5% Encore Rewards in Brown Thomas, BT2 and Arnotts, and up to 5% with Encore Rewards partners. Same 3.83% intro rate for 12 months, €16,000 salary, no annual fee. Worth it only if you shop in those stores regularly.

Student Visa

Open to full-time third-level students who hold an AIB Student Plus account and have banked with AIB for at least three months. No annual fee, a 12-month introductory purchase rate, and a 14.85% standard purchase rate.

Ascent Visa

Listed on AIB’s rate page at 9.48% purchases and a 34.7% representative APR, with a €120 annual fee. The gap between the two figures is the annual fee doing the work in the APR calculation. It does not appear on AIB’s main credit card product page, so treat availability to brand-new applicants as unconfirmed and ask AIB directly.

Cards AIB no longer sells

AIB still publishes rates for these because existing holders keep them, but they are closed to new customers:

  • Gold Visa — 14.72% variable, 20.4% APR
  • Standard Visa — 14.16% variable, 19.7% APR
  • AIB Visa Card — 14.16% variable, 19.7% APR
  • Classic Visa — 14.16% variable, 19.7% APR
  • Personal Premier Visa — €100 annual fee, 1.75% cash advance fee

Fees beyond the interest rate

Charge Amount
Government stamp duty €30 per account per year
Cash advance fee 1.5% of value, minimum €1.90
Non-euro transaction, Visa Europe region 1.75% of transaction value
Non-euro transaction, rest of world 2.75% of transaction value
Late payment fee €7.00
Over limit fee €7.00, first occurrence per statement period
Returned payment fee €7.00
Copy statement €4.00, free by e-statement

The two-tier currency fee matters. A euro-denominated card used inside the EEA costs you 1.75%; the same card in the US, UK or anywhere outside the Visa Europe region costs 2.75%. That is high enough that a Revolut or bunq card is cheaper for holidays.

AIB debit cards and current account fees

AIB replaced its quarterly charging structure on 1 July 2026. You now pay a flat €6 per month on a personal current account, or €20 per month for Private Banking. Before that date it was €4.50 per quarter plus roughly €0.20 per transaction and €0.35 per ATM withdrawal.

The €6 covers card transactions, card taps, transfers and euro payment transactions. Non-euro transactions, drafts, urgent transfers and overdraft charges are still extra.

You pay nothing if you hold an Advantage account (over-66s), Student, Student Plus, Graduate, Standard Care or Basic Bank Account, or if you pay an AIB mortgage on your own home through your AIB current account.

Government stamp duty of 12c applies per ATM cash withdrawal, capped at €5 per card per year.

Who AIB suits

If you carry a balance and want the lowest rate, CLICK is the strongest mainstream card in Ireland at 9.11%. If you earn over €40,000 and clear your balance, Platinum’s cashback plus the intro rate is the better package. If you are transferring a balance, compare the ‘be’ card’s 3.83% for 12 months against An Post’s and Avant’s 0% offers — 3.83% is not zero.

AIB is weak on foreign spending. Nothing in the range beats a digital bank on currency conversion.

Which AIB credit card has the lowest interest rate?

How do I log in to AIB internet banking or contact AIB about my card?

Use AIB’s own channels — aib.ie, the AIB Mobile app, or the phone number on the back of your card. We do not handle account queries and you should never enter AIB login details on a comparison site.

How long does an AIB credit card application take?

AIB does not publish a guaranteed decision time. You can apply online or on paper, and approval depends on a credit assessment including a Central Credit Register check.
